Scenario: Imagine you’re redecorating a room in your house, and you’ve found a beautiful new carpet that’s sold by the square meter.
How can you find out how many square meters of carpet to buy? What should you do in order to ensure you buy the right amount of carpet?
Your room is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide.
Here are the exact steps you should take to measure your room for the carpet.
Step 1: Measure the Room
- Length of the room: 12 feet
- Width of the room: 10 feet
Step 2: Calculate the Area in Square Feet
- Area = Length × Width
- Area = 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft
Step 3: Convert Square Feet to Square Meters
- From the table above, we can see that the multiplication factor to convert sq ft to m² is 0.092903.
- Area in m² = Area in sq ft × Conversion factor
- Area in m² = 120 sq ft × 0.092903 = 11.14836 m²
Step 4: Interpret the Result
- It’s always a good idea to round up the figure above. After all, it’s better to have a little too much carpet than too little!
You would need approximately 11.15 square meters of carpet for your room.
